Surfing is a great sport to participate in. However, you need to keep in mind that whenever you surf, you need to be aware that there are a few unwritten rules that you should be aware of. By following these simple rules, you can be sure that you will not only be safe from the inherent dangers of surfing but also keep other surfers safe. Furthermore, it can also prevent you from damaging your surfing gear and potentially save your life. So remember to follow these rules.

 

The first rule is that you should never drink and surf. Or, do drugs and surf for that matter.  You will have poor judgment, which can result in accidents and even death.

 

The second rule is that you should always be aware of everything. Surfing is fun if you do it safely and responsibly. Always be aware of the other surfers in the water, the current water conditions, and also be aware of any signs of dangers in the water.

 

The third rule would be staying in your comfort zone. Sure you want to try the big waves and surf like the pros do but you need to remember that you should never push yourself too far. Always stay in the waves that you are comfortable surfing. If you mastered it and you are more confident to try bigger waves.  You should do this gradually to avoid the risk of injury.

 

The fourth rule is that you need to be in shape to surf. Always remember that you need to be a strong swimmer. If you lose your board, then you need to swim to the shore and you should expect fighting rip tides which are potentially dangerous to surfers.

 

The fifth rule is that you should know when to bail. You already know that you have to hold on to your board at all times but there will also come a situation where you will need to know when to bail out of your board. This will prevent injuries on your part when you wipe out and it will also prevent injuries to other surfers that may be in your path.

 

The sixth rule is that you should always surf in patrolled beaches. It is a fact that finding a secret surfing place can be a lot of fun. But, you have to consider the fact that surfing has its potential dangers. By surfing in patrolled beaches, you can be sure that someone will be there to help you out in case you get in to trouble in the water.

 

The seventh rule is to never ever drop in. This means that you shouldn’t take someone else’s wave. Always remember that the person nearest to the breaking part of the wave has priority for surfing the wave. Dropping in is considered to be rude as well as very dangerous.

 

The eight rule is you should never surf alone. Although it would be great to have the entire beach to yourself, you have to remember that surfing alone is very dangerous. Think of your surf buddies as your backup and also as your savior. They will be able to assist you if you do get in to trouble and you also need to do the same for them.

 

These are the things that you have to remember about surfing. By remembering these rules following them religiously, you can be sure that you and your fellow surfers will be able to have a lot of fun on your day at the beach riding the waves.

 

 

 

Proper Posture for Elliptical Trainer

Yesterday I went to the gym for my usual sixty minute elliptical workout.  So I am going through my usual routine to prepare for my journey, placing my water in the cup holder, connecting my ear plugs to my I-Phone etc…..when I observe a guy on the elliptical to my left.  I couldn’t help but notice that he was hunched over with his head face first into the screen, arms resting on handles with his hands in a death grip on the handles.  His feet were motoring at a fast pace.  I couldn’t help but chuckle because I knew that he was going to be hurting when he finished.  This poor posture will undoubtably cause some pain and stiffness. If you are like me and enjoy the health benefits of an elliptical workout than follow my tips below.  If you do, your back neck and arms will thank you.

1. Maintain Proper Posture!

While on the elliptical trainer stand upright while maintaining proper spinal alignment.  This will prevent unnecessary strain on your lower back and minimize the risk of injury.  Furthermore, by maintaining proper spinal alignment you engage your core thus resulting in a more beneficial workout.

2. Relax your Hands and Arms!

Avoid the death grip on the handles.  All that stress and strain will just cause muscle soreness and stiffness. Just relax and run while maintaining good posture and a relaxing stride.  If you are having difficulty reaching the handles just let go and let your arms glide freely at your side as if you are running.

3.  Placement of Feet!

Place your feet on the inside of the pedals and distribute your weight in the heals of your feet.  This will prevent you from losing circulation to your feet thus avoiding the resulting numbness and tingling.

These are just a few tips that will help you prevent injury while using an elliptical trainer.  If you follow these tips you will have a pleasurable experience unlike the gentleman I observed yesterday.  He is probably at his chiropractor’s office today.

Life has been treating my family pretty well for having recently moved to the Netherlands from the States. Most Dutch folk speak English so the language barrier hasn't been too tough on us. The Dutch are very friendly and they open up about their personal lives quite easily. Its been very cold here, so the beauty routine has changed quite a bit.
